Women's Golf -- NCAA Championships Day 2

Well day two is in the books and the Deacs are still right there. Wake didn't play its best round today and I think the slow start kind of set the mood for the rest of the round but a score of 300 today was not that bad.

Nannette Hill played a great round of 1-under 71 and she is just two shots off the lead. I think I have seen her miss no more than five fairways in two days, which is phenomenal. She said after the round that she is not trying to force the birdies but rather, she is just staying patient and letting them come to her, which is exactly what you have to do on a long tough course. With the perfect weather the past two days, the course has really begun to dry out and the greens, which were already fast to begin with, are only going to get faster over the final two rounds.

The Deacs have played well at times so far this week but I get the sense that it just hasn't come together yet. In trying to think of an analogy, the best I could come up with is that it's like a person trying to knock down a brick wall with a sledge hammer. With every swing, the wall is slowly starting to chip away but they just haven't gotten all the way through yet. It feels like tomorrow, the sledge will finally break through to the other side.

In golf terms, the team has ham and egged it well so far, in that one day, somebody struggles but they come back and play well the next (ie..Natalie Sheary). But on that second day, someone who played well the day before, shoots a high number. I think tomorrow everyone is will get it together and the Deacs are going to put up a really good score.

They are teeing off the back nine in the final grouping so they will kind of be out of the way and maybe a little forgotten about, which I can't help but think may be a perfect spot. The weather should be perfect again on Thursday and I just have a good feeling about tomorrow.

I hope all of that late night rambling makes sense but I'm just trying to portray the mood here in Owings Mills.

Also, one other interesting tidbit. Senior Jean Chua is playing in her final collegiate event this week. Her parents, Chua Beng Yap and Ong Bee Mooi, made the nearly 30-hour flight from Cheras, Malaysia, to see their daughter play for the first, and last, time as a Demon Deacon. Smile have not left either of their faces all week and I know this has to be a thrill for Jean.
