Rusty LaRue Video
Among the topics we touched on with Rusty were his playing days at Wake Forest and in the professional ranks, the influence that some legendary coaches had on him and his impressions thus far of the 2009-10 Demon Deacons.
I also posted the package that played on the BB&T Field videoboard when he was the Open the Gate guest this past fall. It has some great highlights of his playing days on the gridiron and on the basketball court.
Enjoy the video and your weekend. The final two installments of the Q&A will go up online next week.

NBA Draft Combine on ESPNU
The players are working out at Attack Athletics gym in Chicago. They are grouped according to position: point guards, shooting guards, forwards and centers.
You can easily spot Teague in ESPNU's coverage. He is wearing his signature t-shirt under a jersey.
The combine kicked off with individual interviews on Wednesday evening at the Westin Hotel. In all, 52 total draft hopefuls are in attendance.
NCAA Men's Golf Championships -- Day 2/3
Inverness is a long course and the rough is very thick. Add the rain to it and now the rough is unbearable. The teams at the top of the leaderboard are the ones keeping their golf balls out of the rough. Wake has struggled with that over the last day and a half.
Still, the team is optimistic about their round this afternoon. They feel that if they can get out there and get a few birdies early, they may be able to get on a roll. The only downside to that is most of the players will have to finish their third rounds Friday morning because of the 4:35 pm start.
Wake certainly didn't get the better part of the weather this week. For instance, Oklahoma State is on top of the leaderboard and the Cowboys have pretty much played uninterrupted. They went out and played very well yesterday mornning in ideal conditions before the rain and only had to finish two or three holes after the delay. That's the way is goes sometimes. Hopefully the Deacs can finish out the third round on a strong note and who knows, maybe something crazy will happy this afternoon.
TNT to Air Halftime Feature on Rodney Rogers
Rogers played three seasons at Wake Forest from 1991-93. He was the ACC Player of the Year in 1993 and was inducted into the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. Rogers played 12 seasons in the NBA.
This past winter, Rogers was paralyzed in an ATV accident near his home in Durham.

NCAA Men's Golf Championships -- Day 2
Wake had to dance through the rain drops yeasterday as well, starting out in the light rain. Daniel Meggs, who had the best round of the day for the Deacons, said "The rain was more annoying than anything. We had to try and hold our umbrellas, keep things dry and oh yea, play a 480-yard par 4."
The scoring conditions were oblviously tougher in the morning on Tuesday and the Deacs went on to card a 302. But these 54-holes are sort of like a mini qualifier, as the teams are vying for a spot in the top eight. Coming into the day, the Deacs were 8-shots out of eighth and at the time of the delay, they were still eight back.
Hopefully things clear out of here this afternoon and Wake can atleast get a few holes in. This may make for a long Thursday. Check back after the round for a recap of today's action (if there is any).

Women's Golf -- NCAA Championship Day 3
Last night I had a good feeling about today's round but things just didn't round into shape for the Deacons. They climbed to fourth early on but started to slide midway through the first nine and never really stopped. It felt as if the team hit the wall.
I know everyone is playing and walking the same course but this is a tough hilly course to walk six days straight (including two practice rounds). I don't know if that was the problem today but it sure was a grind. Assistant coach Robin Walton had the best description of the day. She said it was if we had lead in our shoes. We were just drudging along.
The one single shot that pretty much summed up the day was Nannette Hill's tee shot on the par-3 eighth hole, her 17th of the day. She pulled the shot just left and it landed a bit long on top of a mound. It bounded down the hill, onto the cart path and then right up against a tree (pictured left). She had to take a drop and ended up making a double-bogey. She is still just 6-over for the tournament and is tied for 8th.
A couple of not so good notes about Thursday's round.
- The 318 (+30) was the highest round of the day by any team and it was also the highest round the Deacs have shot all season.
- The team was 15-over (half of their final total) on the last five holes.
- Every player on the team had at least one birdie in the third round
Parr & Forman Begin Doubles Tourney Today
Parr and Forman already beat Agostinelli and Cox earlier this month in Wake Forest's NCAA second-round team defeat of UK.
Parr and Forman received a top-eight seed in the 32-team tournament. The Deacon duo won the ITA indoor title last November and could be considered a darkhorse to take the NCAA crown this spring. The pair has won each of its last six doubles matches since the regular season finale against Virginia Tech.
Parr competed in the NCAA singles tournament yesterday and was upset in the first round by Minnesota's Ishay Hadash. This could be a blessing in disguise for the Parr/Forman doubles team, however, as Parr will not have to worry about playing a second-round singles match today as well.
You can watch Parr and Forman live and get up-to-the-minute stats at the Official Tournament Site.

Women's Golf -- NCAA Championships Day 2
Nannette Hill played a great round of 1-under 71 and she is just two shots off the lead. I think I have seen her miss no more than five fairways in two days, which is phenomenal. She said after the round that she is not trying to force the birdies but rather, she is just staying patient and letting them come to her, which is exactly what you have to do on a long tough course. With the perfect weather the past two days, the course has really begun to dry out and the greens, which were already fast to begin with, are only going to get faster over the final two rounds.
The Deacs have played well at times so far this week but I get the sense that it just hasn't come together yet. In trying to think of an analogy, the best I could come up with is that it's like a person trying to knock down a brick wall with a sledge hammer. With every swing, the wall is slowly starting to chip away but they just haven't gotten all the way through yet. It feels like tomorrow, the sledge will finally break through to the other side.
In golf terms, the team has ham and egged it well so far, in that one day, somebody struggles but they come back and play well the next (ie..Natalie Sheary). But on that second day, someone who played well the day before, shoots a high number. I think tomorrow everyone is will get it together and the Deacs are going to put up a really good score.
They are teeing off the back nine in the final grouping so they will kind of be out of the way and maybe a little forgotten about, which I can't help but think may be a perfect spot. The weather should be perfect again on Thursday and I just have a good feeling about tomorrow.
I hope all of that late night rambling makes sense but I'm just trying to portray the mood here in Owings Mills.
Also, one other interesting tidbit. Senior Jean Chua is playing in her final collegiate event this week. Her parents, Chua Beng Yap and Ong Bee Mooi, made the nearly 30-hour flight from Cheras, Malaysia, to see their daughter play for the first, and last, time as a Demon Deacon. Smile have not left either of their faces all week and I know this has to be a thrill for Jean.

Women's Golf -- NCAA Championships Day 1
It is also long and hilly. The full yardage listed this week is 6,422-yards. Most womens tournaments usually try to set the course up around 6,300-yards. Coach Dailey also told me that the course is playing over 250-yards longer than it did for the NCAA Preview last fall. Even with the length, the elevation changes are amazing. Some of the holes play dramatically uphill or downhill, making it a challenge to walk (and not just for the players).
The conditions were absolutely ideal for scoring this afternoon. There was hardly a breathe of wind and there wasn't even a cloud in the sky. Still, the scoring average in the opening round was 77.92. I'm predicting that is the lowest average all week and since the rounds took over five hours to complete today, we're in store for some marathon rounds the rest of the week.
Watch Golfweek's Asher Wildman and Lance Ringler's Five Takes from the first round. They do a decent job of recapping the opening day.
Wake tees off a 8 am tomorrow morning so we'll see what the morning holds. Coach Dailey wasn't particularly happy with the way the team ended the round today (they were 5-over the final four holes). Hopefully the morning conditions treat the Deacs a little better.
Poll Results - Week of May 11
Palmer received 32 percent of the vote, just beating out Tim Duncan who received 29 percent. Jim Grobe, who could certainly motivate would-be graduates with a pre-game-esque pep talk, finished third with 20 percent.
Alas, the Deacon received just 11 percent support to speak at commencement, while new Seahawk Aaron Curry pulled up the rear with five percent.
Vice President Joe Biden was the actual speaker at Wake Forest's commencement on Monday. His speech is detailed here.

Rusty LaRue News Clippings
LaRue talked to Dan Collins of the Winston-Salem Journal about his decision to join the Deacon basketball staff.
Dan Collins also provides some insight into LaRue in his blog.
Jeff Mills of the Greensboro News & Record writes that LaRue is coming home to Wake Forest.
Keith Jarrett of the Asheville Citizen-Times points out that LaRue has Asheville connections.
Martin Rickman of Blogger So Dear likes that the hire was kept inside the Demon Deacon program.
Duncan, Paul Continue to Set Records
Both were named to the All-NBA Second Team on Wednesday. For Duncan, it was his 12th straight All-NBA honor, making him a perfect 12-for-12 since he entered the league in 1997-98. He became the first player in NBA history to be named All-NBA in each of his first 12 seasons in the league.
Duncan is also just the eighth player in NBA history to earn All-NBA honors 12 or more times. He joins Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (15), Shaquille O’Neal (14), Karl Malone (14), Dolph Schayes (12) Bob Cousy (12), Jerry West (12) and Hakeem Olajuwon (12) on the prestigious list.
For Paul, he is quickly becoming one of the most accomplished point guards in the history of the game. He led the NBA in both assists and steals for the second straight season, becoming the first player in league history to accomplish the feat.
He is also the only player in NBA history to lead the league in assists and steals and finish in the top 10 in scoring in the same season.
Thanks to Duncan and Paul, Wake Forest was the only college to have multiple players on the All-NBA Teams.
NCAA Men's Tennis Live Stats
Live stats of the match are available here.
This is Wake's second trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 in the past three seasons. In 2007, the Deacs made it to the Sweet 16 behind All-American Todd Paul. Paul and the Deacons fell to Virginia, 4-1, in Athens, Ga., that year.
This time around, Wake Forest is led by All-Americans Cory Parr and Steven Forman. As a doubles team, the pair is ranked No. 6 in the country. Parr is ranked No. 10 in the nation in singles play and was recently named the ITA Mideast Region Player of the Year.

Poll Results - Week of May 4
Lacrosse received 72 percent of the vote, while softball was a distant second with 11 percent. Bowling received nine percent support, and gymnastics four percent.
Motorsports, unfortunately, got just one vote. If you don't think motorsports can happen at the intercollegiate level, check out the University of Northwestern Ohio Racers.
If Wake Forest were to ever add lacrosse, the Deacons would not be without rivals. Currently, four ACC schools field men's lacrosse while six have women's lacrosse teams. Duke, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia have both men's and women's teams. Boston College and Virginia Tech field women's lacrosse teams.
Wake Forest has lacrosse at the club level on campus with both men's and women's teams.

NFL Draft Updates
Aaron Curry had the chance to meet the media in Seattle last week and he left a positive impression. Among his comments to the press was one where he claimed he “was just getting started.”
Aaron’s mom, Chris, accompanied him as did his fiancĂ©, Jamila. AC talked to Jim Moore of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer about his love of dogs.
Danny O’Neill of the Seattle Times has some fast facts on AC including his love of Jujubees.
Aaron took a few minutes to answer some questions from the Sporting News and talked about how he changed a young man’s life. When he finally made it onto the practice field, he found himself already on the first team.
Alphonso Smith met with the media in Denver while Dennis Dodd at CBSSports.com says that Wake’s success in the draft is another sign the Deacons are here to stay.
At the Orlando Sentinel, Jim Grobe made Jeremy Fowler’s top 10 list of the best coaches in America. But most Deacon fans already know that.
