The Heisman Trophy will be awarded tonight and Stanford running back Toby Gerhart is one of the five finalists. It's interesting to note that Gerhart rushed for at least 100 yards against every opponent save two this year. The Deacons held Gerhart to 82 yards on 17 carries. Oregon State also limited Gerhart to 96 yards.

If Gerhart should win, he would become the fourth Heisman Trophy winner to have faced the Demon Deacons during the year he won the trophy. In 2000, Florida State’s Chris Weinke completed 23 of 36 passes for 324 yards and five touchdowns in FSU’s 35-6 win at then-Groves Stadium. In 1993, the Seminoles’ Charlie Ward completed 13 of 20 passes for 125 yards. Army’s Doc Blanchard had a 52-yard interception return in a 54-0 win over Wake Forest in 1945. Blanchard would go on to win the Heisman Trophy that season.

Wake Forest redshirt freshman receiver Chris Givens leads the nation's freshmen in touchdown catches this season. Givens has eight TD grabs this year, the most-ever by a Wake Forest redshirt freshman. He also ranks 32nd in the nation overall in touchdown catches.

Givens' 8 is the most by a freshman in Division I. Toledo's Eric Page has seven and Alex Torres of Texas Tech and Alshon Jeffery of South Carolina have six.

Also, the Sporting News released its list of the top 50 players in the NBA. And, as expected, Chris Paul and Tim Duncan are among the top six. Kobe is No. 1 followed by Lebron, Dwayne Wade and Dwight Howard. TD is fifth and CP3 is sixth. That's a nice plug for Wake Forest!

Harvey Hale's Pro Debut

Former Demon Deacon guard Harvey Hale (2006-09) made his professional basketball debut in Finland over the weekend. Harvey played 36 minutes and finished with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting.

He filled up the stat sheet with six rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Harvey also went 5-for-6 at the foul line and had five fouls of his own, including a technical.

Harvey's team fell, 90-85, in his debut.

Wake Forest University quarterback Riley Skinner has received clearance from team physicians to play when the Deacons visit Georgia Tech Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ABC regionally and ESPN2 nationally.

Skinner suffered a concussion late in last Saturday’s game vs. Miami.

Skinner did not practice Monday, saw minimal practice time Tuesday, and gradually returned to the regular practice routine later in the week.

The fifth-year senior quarterback is expected to start his 33rd consecutive game for the Deacons on Saturday.

That's a phrase you often hear in sports, that it's a game of inches. Inches short of a first down, or a throw nips a runner at first by inches.

Games are also decided by percentage points and decimal points. Take the race for the ACC record for career completion percentage.

Entering the Georgia Tech game this week, Wake's Riley Skinner has completed 824 of 1,231 career passes. That is a completion percentage of .66937.

Virginia's Matt Schaub is the current ACC record holder for career completion percentage. He was successful on 716 of 1,069 pass attempts during his career as a Cavalier from 2000-03. That is a completion percentage of .66978.

So, with three regular season games remaining, Skinner trails Schaub by .0004. In layman's terms, that's four 10,000ths of a point.

Two more of Wake Forest's men's basketball games have been picked up to be televised on ESPNU. The Deacons' Dec. 16 game at UNC Wilmington is now set to air live, as well as Wake's Dec. 31 home game against Richmond.

Both games will tip at 7 p.m. and will be available nationally on ESPNU.

In total, Wake Forest will have 21 of its 28 regular season games televised. The Deacs will be on national TV 14 times, including nine telecasts on the ESPN family of networks. Beginning Dec. 1, all but two of Wake Forest's games will be televised.

Confined to a wheelchair after an ATV accident last November, Rogers waited at midfield as the Deacons ran out of the gate and huddled around him.

Former Deacon Now a Hustlin' Owl

Former Wake Forest basketball walk-on Matt Smith has decided to continue his basketball career at Oregon Tech, the school announced yesterday. Smith, who lettered two seasons with the Deacons from 2006-07, now gets the rare privilege of being known as a Hustlin' Owl.

Jean Chua Wins Professional Debut

Recent graduate Jean Chua made her professional debut last week at the Thai LPGA Open. Chua fired a final round 66 to claim the win in her first professional start.

After opening with rounds of 71-76, Chua found herself seven-shots behind good friend Titiya Plucksataporn.

But in the final round, Chua got the putter working early and had closed the gap to just two shots after a front nine of 4-under par. She went on to make two more birdies on the back to post a final round 6-under 66. She won by three shots over Plucksataporn.

Chua plans to remain in Thailand to work on her game with her coach before returning to the states next year. She will try to qualify for the US Women's Open and then will enter LPGA Qualifying School.

Women's Soccer Begins Fall Practice

The Wake Forest women's soccer team began its preparation for the 2009 season with a pair of practices on Thursday. I had an opportunity to shoot some footage at the afternoon training session. I also spoke with Demon Deacon head coach Tony da Luz and senior goalkeeper Laura Morse. The video is available here.

The Deacs take the field for the first time in 2009 on Saturday, August 15, at 7 p.m. against Campbell in a home exhibition game. The regular season opener is Friday, August 21, at 7 p.m. against High Point at Spry Stadium.

Coordinating Your NBA Schedules

The NBA schedules came out this week so we thought we would simplify your decision-making process on which games to attend during the 2009-10 season.

The Atlanta Hawks and rookie guard Jeff Teague visit the Charlotte Bobcats on Nov. 6 and April 6. You can catch the Chicago Bulls and rookie forward James Johnson in Charlotte on Jan. 7. Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs visit the Bobcats on Jan. 15 while Josh Howard and Dallas come to North Carolina on March 1.

If you're a Deacon football fan and looking to combine a road trip with an NBA game, consider going to Atlanta on November 7. The Deacons visit the Yellow Jackets in football (game time yet to be announced) while Teague and the Hawks host the Denver Nuggets that night.

Or, if you want to make it an all-alumni weekend, book a trip to the French Quarter for Dec. 18-19. You can watch CP3 and the Hornets entertain Denver on Dec. 18 and the next day, watch Chip Vaughn and the Saints host the Dallas Cowboys in the Superdome.

Deacons Making Headlines on the DURAMED Futures Tour

Former, current and future Demon Deacons were all making noise this past week at the DURAMED Futures Tour’s USI Championship.

Current Deacon Natalie Sheary made her second start of the summer at the USI. Despite missing the cut, she managed to make the cut two weeks ago in her debut and finished tied for 31st.

Former Deac Maggie Simons has had her share of ups and downs this summer but last Saturday was certainly the highlight of the year thus far. She recorded her first-career hole-in-one on the par-3 13th, knocking an 8-iron in from 132-yards.

Finally, future Deacon Stephanie Kim, who will be a freshman this coming fall, was selected to represent Team USA in the PING Junior Solheim Cup. Kim has been a full-time member of the DURAMED Futures Tour each of the last two seasons.

Both Kim and Simons made the most recent Futures Tour Weekly Release. Kim recently talked with Lisa Mickey about the Solheim Cup and her future at Wake Forest while Simons was picked as the “Quote of the Week”.

Bingham To Run First Professional Race

All-American Michael Bingham will compete in his first professional event Saturday evening at the Avian London Grand Prix.

The Grand Prix will take place at the Crystal Palace in London and Bingham will run the 400-meter dash.

Bingham, who recently signed with Ultimate Performance Sport Management, will then run one more race before joining his Great Britain teammates at the 2009 World Championships on August 15-23, in Berlin, Germany.

New Fifth Quarter Trailer Available

A new trailer for "The Fifth Quarter" movie is now available on-line. The movie chronicles the 2006 Wake Forest football season in which linebacker Jon Abbate helped lead the Deacons to the ACC Championship and the FedEx Orange Bowl while celebrating the life of his brother Luke who was killed in a car accident.

The Bleacher Report says the Baylor at Wake Forest game on Sept. 5 is one of the "must-see" games of the opening weekend while ESPN says it will be one of the Big 12's toughest non-conference games.

Jeff Teague has signed a contract with the Atlanta Hawks.

Former Deacon basketball All-America Skip Brown was recently named president of the North Carolina Bankers Association.

NBA Summer Update

James Johnson has led the Chicago Bulls in each of their first two summer league games in Orlando this week. The forward out of Wake Forest scored 21 points in the Bulls' opener against the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday and then followed with 16 points against the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday.

The Bulls have lost each of their two summer league games thus far. Johnson has started and has played more than 34 minutes in both games, the most on Chicago's summer league roster.

Johnson and the Bulls have three more games in Vegas remaining, playing each day this weekend. For complete coverage, check out the Bulls' official summer league website.

As for Jeff Teague and the Atlanta Hawks, they are set to open their mini camp next week. The Hawks are not participating in a summer league this year. For info on the mini camp, check out the Hawks' official site.

Deacon Feature Saturday on ABC

"Football Saturdays in the South" is a TV series produced by Raycom that highlights many of the unique aspects of college football. The first episode airs on Saturday, July 18 and features Randy Burnette, the gentleman who provides the motorcycle that the Deacon rides into BB&T Field and the Joel Coliseum.

The show airs on WXLV (ABC) in the Triad at 4:00 pm on Saturday, July 18.

Wake-Purdue on ESPN

On Wednesday the ACC announced the television broadcast assignments for this year's ACC/Big Ten Challenge games. Wake Forest received a fortunate draw, as the Deacons will play the Purdue Boilermakers on ESPN at 7 p.m.

The Wake-Purdue game is one of four matchups in the 11-game Challenge that will air on the main ESPN network. The Deacons and Boilermakers will duel in the first game of a doubleheader that also features a rematch of last year's national championship game in Michigan State and North Carolina.

Former Deacs Carroll and Hesmer Visit White House

Brian Carroll and Will Hesmer, members of the 2008 MLS Cup champion Columbus Crew, recently visited the White House and President Barack Obama. The two former Deacs helped the Crew to their first MLS Cup title in 2008, defeating the New York Red Bulls 3-1. The team presented President Obama with a personalized jersey and autographed ball. Johnson Blogging for Bulls

Former Wake Forest forward James Johnson is providing some first-hand insight into his world on Bulls.com. Johnson is blogging for the team's official site and already has two posts online.

Chicago announced last week that it had signed Johnson and fellow first-round pick Taj Gibson. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Johnson will get his first taste of NBA action when he and the Bulls open their 2009 NBA Summer League schedule tonight against the Golden State Warriors in Las Vegas.

The Bulls' summer league roster is littered with players that Johnson is familiar with from the ACC. Joining the former Demon Deacon are Duke's DeMarcus Nelson, NC State's Brandon Costner and Virginia Tech's A.D. Vassallo.

Reifers Off To a Blazzing Start

Kyle Reifers, a 2006 graduate, was 10-under in an eight-hole stretch on Thursday on his was to a blistering opening round 11-under 61 at the Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic in Clarksburg, Ontario, Canada.

Reifers opened his round with three-straight pars before getting his first of eight birdies on the day at No. 4. That started his string of hot streak as he made another birdie at No. 5, an eagle at the par-5 sixth and three-straight birdies to close the front nine in 7-under 29.

He started the back nine with another eagle at the par-5 tenth and a birdie at No. 11 to go to 10-under par. Remarkably, Reifers made a bogey at the par-3 12^th followed by three more pars at holes 13, 14 and 15. But the Columbus, Ohio, native finished strong with birdies at Nos. 16 and 17 and a solid par at No. 18.

The 61 is ties Reifers’ lowest round of his professional career. He also fired a 61 in the final round of the Chattanooga Classic, his first professional tournament, to come from behind and win his first tournament.

Ron Whittaker also opened with a bogey-free round of 5-under 67 and found himself tied for seventh after the first round.

Wadkins Brothers

Travis Wadkins, a rising senior on the men's golf team, is playing this week in the Eastern Amateur at Elizabeth Manor Golf Club in Portsmouth, Va. That may not seem like a big deal but what is, is that his younger brother Tucker is also in the field this week.

Tucker, who is just 16 years old, is one of the top junior golfers in Texas. The two are looking to follow in their father, Lanny Wadkins' footsteps by winning the Eastern Amateur. Pops pulled off the feat in 1969.

The Virginian-Pilot caught-up with the Wadkins brothers and asked them about playing in the same tournament and what it's like chasing dad.

CP3 Grants a Wish

Catch Chris Paul on SportsCenter tonight (July 8) about 6:35 pm as he is featured on the "My Wish" segment of the show. Chris and his family granted the wish of Cole Johanson, a 10-year-old from Portland, OR who is stricken with a rare form of cancer known as Burkitt’s Lymphoma.

Cole’s wish came true when he and his family traveled to Paul’s hometown of Winston-Salem, N.C., to spend some time with his hero. Paul took Cole to see his childhood home, played some one-on-one at Paul’s alma mater of West Forsyth High School and wrapped up the day with lunch at the Olive Garden, Cole’s favorite restaurant. Said Cole of the experience: “It’s amazing how cancer was the worst thing that ever happened to me, but the day I met Chris Paul was the best day of my life.”

Hip Hop Dance Class Photos

A handful of Wake Forest student-athletes were able to show off their moves by taking a hip hop dance class this summer. Football's Brandon Ghee, Basketball's L.D. Williams, Soccer's Cody Arnoux and Volleyball's Megan Thornberry were all in the class.

Hunter Willard from Student-Athlete Services was kind enough to take some photos and post a gallery online to show the dancers in action. Too bad there wasn't a video camera rolling as well...

Johnson & Teague Introduced

Wake Forest's James Johnson and Jeff Teague have both been officially introduced to their new teams. Teague was introduced in Atlanta on Friday, while Johnson was unveiled in Chicago on Monday (along with fellow first round Bulls draft pick Taj Gibson).

Johnson was the No. 16 pick in last week's draft by the Bulls. Maybe coincidentally, he will wear #16 on his Bulls jersey. Johnson's collegiate number (#23) is sort of off-limits in Chi-town.

Teague was picked three spots later at No. 19 by the Hawks. Deacon Zero will stick with his signature jersey #0. The Associated Press details Teague's decision to don the digit.

Good luck to both James and Jeff as they embark on their professional careers.

Last week's poll posed an interesting hypothetical question: Who would you like to hear as a guest PA announcer at BB&T Field?

Voters overwhelmingly were in favor of hearing the voice of James Earl Jones boom throughout the stadium, as the actor received 40 percent of the vote.

The English-born Sean Connery was a close runner-up with 27%. However, fellow Brit Simon Cowell (he of American Idol fame) received nary a vote.

Cheyenne Woods Playing in First Pro Tournament

When rising sophomore Cheyenne Woods tees her ball up Thursday morning, she will be playing in her first professional tournament at the Wegmans LPGA in Pittsford, N.Y.

The Phoenix, Ariz., native received a sponsors exemption into the field along with former Duke standout and former high school teammate Amanda Blumenherst. Since Blumenherst turned professional at the beinging of the month, Woods will be the lone amateur in the field.

With 95 of the top 100 players on the LPGA money list in the field this week, Woods will be in good company but ever since her arrival at Locust Country Club on Sunday, she has been quite the media darling.

The Buffalo News ran a preview feature and talked to not only Woods but teammate Natalie Sheary and head coach Dianne Dailey. Woods also recently sat down with Karen Crouse of the N.Y. Times and spoke about the tournament as well as her freshman season as Wake. Fox Sports caught up with Cheyenne and he mother Susan earlier in the week and asked Cheyenne about the pressures of being Tiger's niece as well as what her goals were for the tournament.

You can follow the tournament through Live Scoring on LPGA.com and ESPN2 will have coverage of the event on Friday from 5-7 pm EST, Saturday from 3-5 pm EST and on Sunday from 5-7 pm EST.

Dino Gaudio Interview

To go along with my preview of tomorrow night's NBA Draft, I did a video Q&A with Deacon head coach Dino Gaudio.

Gaudio gave his take on the draft prospects of James Johnson and Jeff Teague, as well as a brief opinion on the news that Darius Songaila was traded to the Timberwolves today.

The 2009 NBA Draft is tomorrow night at Madison Square Garden in New York. According to the Sporting News, Johnson was invited to attend the Draft but declined. No word on whether Teague will be in NYC.

Former Deac Porsche Jones Takes Over at Carver H.S.

Former Demon Deacon women's basketball player Porsche Jones was recently named the head coach of the Carver H.S. girls' basketball team.

Jones starred at Winston-Salem's Carver before coming to Wake Forest. She played for the Deacons for three seasons from 2004-06. She battled injuries most of her career and played in 65 games with 54 starts. Jones led the Deacons in assists and steals in 2004-05.
